The gripping device has a gripping unit (1) arranged on a carrier frame, where the gripping unit is provided with a drive unit (11) and two guide arms (3,5) with respective clamping portions (4,6). The guide arms are connected to each other at the ends opposite to the clamping portions in an articulated manner. The drive unit is coupled with the guide arms by a guide element (12), where the guide arms are moved in a synchronous manner by the guide element for gripping a sheet material (2) during a closing movement. An articulated connection (7) is provided with a spring mechanism. An independent claim is included for a method for handling a sheet material with a gripping device.
