The light emitting diode lighting unit (10) comprises multiple light emitting diodes (13) arranged on a surface (11a) of a circuit board (11). A cooling unit is coupled with the circuit board for dissipating heat generated during operation of the light emitting diodes. The circuit board has two metallization layers (15) as the cooling unit on its both surfaces. The circuit board is provided with ventilation holes, where the secondary ventilation holes located immediately below the light emitting diodes have larger diameter compared to the primary ventilation holes located in the circuit board.
