The method involves detecting mechanical resonance characteristics of a coil i.e. gradient coil (104), by determining center frequency and quality factor of a resonant circuit. The mechanical resonance characteristics are reproduced by an electrical oscillating circuit model (20). A determination is made to check whether the changing current in the electrical oscillating circuit model to be transmitted through the coil causes resonance characteristics. The current flow through the coil is blocked when the resonance characteristics exceeds a predetermined threshold value. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a monitoring module (2) an MRI system (3) a computer program comprising a set of instructions for performing a coil operating method.
