The inductive proximity switch has a shell core (1), two transmitter coils (2,3) for generating a magnetic changeover field and two receiving coils (4,5) for measuring the magnetic changeover field generated by one of the transmitter coils. The former transmitter coil and the former receiving coil are arranged outside the shell core and are suitable for evaluating the installation situation of the inductive proximity switch. The latter transmitter coil and the latter receiving coil are arranged within the shell core and are suitable for evaluating the monitoring area of the proximity switch. An independent claim is included for a method for operating an inductive proximity switch.
