The diagnostic apparatus has a vehicle-external measurement signal adapter (4) that acquires the raw signal of an impact sound sensor (2) in a motor car. An evaluation module (7) evaluates the raw signal of the impact sound sensor in given frequency range, and determines whether the amplitude of the raw signal exceeds threshold. A graphical output module (8) performs visual indication of the activated defective mechanical component of the motor vehicle based on the determination that the amplitude of the raw signal exceeds threshold.
