The method involves projecting a request signal e.g. laser light signal, acoustic and/or optical signal, into an operation region (B) of a contactless controlled medical device (30). A gesture-based response signal is detected by a part of a user in response to the request signal. A safety switch (100) in the medical device is operated depending on the detected response signal. The request signal is projected by a laser projector out/or an infrared light transmitter. The reply signal is computed from positioning data of the user at predefined positions. An independent claim is also included for a system for operating a safety switch.
