The device i.e. MRI system (2), has a tunnel (6), in which a body region to be examined of a patient (10) is positioned during examination. The tunnel is partially surrounded by a base unit (4). An access (8) is provided for the tunnel. An imaging system (14) generates an optical illusion, which imparts an impression to the patient. The access and the tunnel include a large expansion than a preset expansion. The imaging system includes a reflection layer (22) and an image shielding layer, which partially cover the base unit and are positioned in a region of the access. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a medical device.
