The device (1) has position detection sensors arranged in a defined position to a measuring head (10). A processor (80) detects and evaluates positional data of a sensing device (12) in a scanning operation at an object (100) from values of the sensors. The sensors are designed as inertial sensors in form of translatory acceleration sensors for detection of translations in X-Y-Z directions and rotations around X, Y and z-axes. A detection device is provided for detecting height values of peak height, and an evaluation device acts as a filter for computation of the positional data. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for operating a coordinate measurement device (2) a computer program product comprising instructions to perform a method for operating a coordinate measurement device.
