The device has a switching element (K1) i.e. relay, switched between switching contacts (P1, P2). Predetermined total minimum voltage strength is provided between the contacts, if the contacts are non-conductively connected by the switching element. Electronic components (5, R1-Rn) e.g. ohmic resistor, are switched between the contacts, and a voltage-limiting component (VDR) e.g. surge arrester, is attached parallel to the switching element. The switching element includes minimum voltage strength, which is smaller than total minimum voltage strength between the contacts.
