The heat exchanger (8) has inlets (6, 7) and outlets (9, 10) for fluids (4, 5), where the heat exchanger is divided into three portions (1, 2, 3). The portions are characterized such that each portion passes both the fluids. The fluids within two of the portions are in co-current flow to each other. The fluids in the other portion are in counter-current flow to each other. A flow path (12) of the one fluid is not deflected within the heat exchanger in a flow direction. Another flow path (13) of another fluid is deflected within the heat exchanger in the flow direction.
