The device (1) has an input signal terminal (13) comprising a control unit (12) by which two electrical switches (10, 11) i.e. relays, are switched between three states depending on an electrical control signal, where the control signal is present at the input signal terminal. The switches are opened in one state, so that an input terminal (2) is galvanically disconnected from an output terminal (4). One switch is opened and another switch is closed in another state. The former switch is closed and the latter switch is opened in a third state. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a motor car (2) a method for starting an internal combustion engine of a motor car.
