The dishwasher (10) has a tub (18) defining a treatment chamber (20), and a spraying system (28) for spraying fluid to the chamber. A recirculation system recirculates the sprayed fluid back to the spraying fluid for defining a fluid recirculation path. An ozone generator (62) has a proton exchange membrane that is positioned within the recirculation path for generating ozone from the fluid. A counter flow system fluid-couples the recirculation system and the generator for returning the fluid flow through the membrane, where the generator is designed as a proton exchange membrane-cell. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a dishwasher.
