The method involves placing (52) a displaceable tool having a negative contour at its edge on a workpiece. A material deformation of the component is introduced (53) locally in the area of the workpiece adjacent to the area of the negative contour so that the material from the workpiece is deformed over the negative contour and a defined contour of the workpiece is generated in the area of the negative contour. The workpiece has an undercut with a defined contour after relocation and removal (55) of the tool. An independent claim is included for a device, such as a tool, for producing undercuts in a work piece by material deformation.
