The fluid transfer device (100) includes a piezoelectric actuator (110) that is externally coupled to the microfluidic pump device (130). The actuator is axially displaced along a lengthwise axis (L) such that it operates the internal valve and the internal pump chamber (140) of the microfluidic device. A high-stiffness actuator (150), coupled to the piezoelectric actuator, dynamically adjusts position of the piezoelectric actuator relative to the microfluidic pump device. The axial displacement of the piezoelectric actuator is less than about 10 micrometers.
