The method involves providing an indexing finger (8) located close to a longitudinal edge (2a) of a web (2). The finger is movable between two positions. Another finger (9) is allowed to be movable between a position in which the latter finger is free with respect to the longitudinal edge, and another position in which the latter finger is engaged in a notch (7) after each step of advancing the strip. The fingers in the notch are released before new step of advancing the strip.
