The method involves rotating an axle (16) of a piston previously introduced into a small end (10) of a connecting rod by a motor (38), where the small end is outside the motor. Resistive torque exerted on the axle is measured by a torque meter placed in a line of a shaft of the motor, where the motor is connected to a shaft. Wear is listed by measuring wear grooves on the axle and/or by estimating used volume of the axle. Load is applied on a location of the small end by a cylinder (22), where the small end is subjected to maximal stress exerted by an engine of a vehicle during operation. An independent claim is also included for a test bench for characterizing tribological properties of an axle of a piston for an engine of a vehicle.
