The device has a cylindrical protection sleeve (10) comprising a bore with an inlet portion having a camelback shaped longitudinal section. Two vertices (12) of the section are dimensioned to compress a seal (2) i.e. O-ring, positioned in a cylindrical groove (1A) of a mechanical part (1), during withdrawal of the mechanical part from the sleeve before assembling the mechanical part. The compression of the seal causes rising of oil, which is migrated into the bottom of the groove, for lubricating the mechanical part. The inlet portion of the bore is formed with two grooves (13). An independent claim is also included for a method for protecting a mechanical part such as shaft, before mounting the mechanical part.
