Use of a mixture (A) comprising a fluoroketone and carrier gas as a medium for electrical insulation and/or quenching electric arcs in a high voltage electric appliance, is claimed, where the fluoroketone is octofluorobutan-2-one and is present in the mixture in a molar percentage (M) of at least 95 mole%, where M is determined by a equation: (P c4k/P mixture) x 100 (I), where P mixtureis a pressure, expressed in kilopascals, of mixture at 20[deg] C in the electric appliance, P c4kis a pressure, expressed in kilopascals, which is equivalent to saturation vapor pressure, at 20[deg] C, which is present in octofluorobutan-2-one at the lowest temperature of the electric appliance, and the P c4kis determined by a equation: (PVS c4kx 93)/T minimal(II), where the PVS c4krepresents saturation vapor pressure of octofluorobutan-2-one at the lowest temperature of the electric appliance, expressed in kilopascals, and T minimalrepresents the minimum temperature of the electric appliance, expressed in Kelvin. An independent claim is included for a medium voltage electric appliance comprising a sealed enclosure in which the electrical components are located, and a mixture comprising the carrier gas and the fluoroketone.
