The method involves determining a value of a saturation torque reflecting a maximum force provided by an electrical machine (37), when a hybrid vehicle (25) is in a zero-emissions vehicle (ZEV) traction mode. A value of a torque requested by a user of the vehicle is measured according to a position of an accelerator pedal. A value of a transition torque greater than the value of the saturation torque is determined. A heat engine (31) is started when the value of the torque requested by the user exceeds the transition torque value.
