The invention relates to an electrochemical generator comprising a stack of N cells in series. To control the voltage across the cells, control means are provided which comprise for each cell UC, a first reactive passive component (D) whose impedance varies as a function of the DC voltage across its terminals, this component being polarized by the voltage delivered by the cell (UC) and a second reactive or resonant passive component (L) forming with the first reactive passive component a series or parallel resonant circuit having a predetermined nominal resonant frequency fni for a nominal bias voltage delivered by the cell. By supplying all the N resonant circuits with a variable frequency signal generator 1 f, a detection circuit 2 makes it possible to detect resonance peaks (s) at the terminals of the assembly thus supplied. The difference between the resonance frequency fd corresponding to a detected peak and the nominal resonance frequency fn provides an indication of the state of the associated cell. The differences of the frequencies fd - fd deliver for their part directly information relating to the homogeneity of the cells between them.
