The device has a detection unit i.e. sensor, for detecting access of person in a shaft (3) of a lift. Another detection unit (17) detects that a cabin (5) has reached position of intervention at distance from a ceiling (21) or ground (31). A stopping unit i.e. parachute device (11), locks the cabin in a position so as to provide a safety zone for a person intervening the shaft, where the stopping unit locks the cabin on detection of access by the former detection unit, and on detection of the latter detection unit that the cabin has reached intervention position. An independent claim is also included for a method for locking a cabin of a lift shaft.
