The invention relates to a steering column comprising an upper body (1), two connecting flanges (22, 23) of the upper body (1) to a support element (2) and a device for clamping and locking the upper body ( 1) in position on an inner tube (4), the device comprising a clamping screw (5) passing through the flanges (22, 23), a set of cams comprising a movable cam (9) freely mounted in translation along the clamping screw (5) and a fixed cam (8), the movable cam (9) being arranged to bear on one of the flanges (23) and a rack (10) adapted to cooperate with a notch provided on the another flange (22), an elastic means (11) being arranged between the movable cam (9) and the rack (10) to exert on the latter a restoring force towards the flange (22) bearing the notch.
