Preparing a copolymer comprises copolymerizing a vinylidene fluoride monomer with a monomer of alpha -trifluoromethacrylic acid or its derivative in the presence of a xanthate or trithiocarbonate compound. Independent claims are included for: (1) preparing a block copolymer comprising reacting a copolymer of the vinylidene fluoride monomer and the monomer of alpha -trifluoromethacrylic acid or its derivative, having a terminal xanthate or trithiocarbonate group, with a comonomer (b1); (2) the copolymer prepared by the method; and (3) a block copolymer comprising a block (a) of the copolymer of the vinylidene fluoride monomer and the monomer of alpha -trifluoromethacrylic acid or its derivative and a homopolymer block (b).
