The machine has a drive unit (11) for movement of a band of material (9), and a material band forming device (1) including a matrix extending along a spacing of a round rod to define a guide path between the matrix and the round rod. The matrix includes a forming guide having a helical slope whose active surface is intended to be in contact with the band, so as to allow partial winding of a portion of the band around the round rod during movement of the band by the drive unit in a direction parallel to a longitudinal axis of the round rod. An independent claim is also included for a method for forming a band of material in a sheet to obtain a cross-sectional profile having a curved portion.
