Quantification of a detergent in a sample comprises: contacting protonated form of the detergent with a deuterated form of the detergent and/or a molecule having chemical properties equivalent to that the protonated form of the detergent and mass spectrometry distingable separate from the protonated form of the detergent, and measuring the proportions of the protonated form of the detergent, the deuterated form of the detergent and/or the molecule by mass spectrometry. An independent claim is included for use of a mass spectrometric technique for the titration of the detergent, where the technique comprises an internal standard consisting of the deuterated form of the detergent and/or the molecule by mass spectrometry distingable of the protonated form of the detergent and having equivalent chemical properties.
