The method involves performing a differential quantification on frequency coefficients of digital signals output from a synthetic lateral aperture radar (SLAR) (8), so as to reduce the cost of coding high frequency coefficients with respect to low-frequency coefficients. The differential quantification is performed by filtering the frequency coefficients of the signals in a filter (11), and quantifying the filtered frequency coefficients in a quantifier (12). The frequential coefficients are obtained from Fourier transform of an image block consisted of raw data output from the SLAR. An independent claim is also included for a device for compression of digital signals output from of a sensor with synthetic opening.
