A method of mapping the crystalline orientation of a sample of a monofunctional or polycrystalline material having undergone a mechanical shaping step, the method comprising the steps of: a) acquiring at least three images of said sample under directional lighting, each image corresponding to different lighting and / or acquisition geometry; b) identifying crystalline grains on said images, and associating with each of them a vector or matrix representative of luminous intensity values measured on different images corresponding to said grain; and c) determining the crystalline orientation of each said grain according to the corresponding vector or matrix; said steps being carried out after said mechanical shaping step and before any chemical etching or polishing operation of the sample surface.
