The method involves allowing a purging valve (152) to establish a fluid communication between a reserve chamber (150) of a fuel vapor filter (15) or canister and an intake manifold (13) of an internal combustion engine (1). A pressure reigning inside the intake manifold is measured. A modeled pressure of a pressure collector is determined according to an operation point of the engine. A dysfunction of the valve is diagnosed according to difference between the measured pressure and the modeled pressure between beginning and end of a phase of opening of the valve. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine.
