The supporting device (10) has a tactile element which allows a user to notice the device without the use of vision, and a passive radio frequency identification (RFID) transponder having unique identifier. An RFID reader carried by user is provided near the passive RFID transponder to detect the identifier so that the position of device associated with detected identifier in database is determined. An independent claim is included for system for providing navigation assistance for visually impaired user.
