Marine seismic streamers which are longer than required to meet a geophysical requirement

A marine seismic streamer system comprising one or more seismic sources and two or more streamers. At least one streamer has a length B that is longer than a minimum length A required to perform a seismic survey based on a number of the streamers and a survey design. Minimum length A is long enough to meet the design geophysical requirement. The length beyond the minimum length is used for acoustic positioning and a ratio of the length to the minimum length is based on a radius of turn during a survey. The longer length enables data to be obtained during a turn. As the turning circle decreases, the ratio of B/A may decrease. The streamers may have acoustic devices for acoustic positioning along the section of the streamer which is beyond the minimum length.
