A method and apparatus for performing time division duplex (TDD) communication, such as may be performed over a wireless communications network. A first circuit pathway is used to transmit a first radio frequency signal in a transmission mode and a second circuit pathway 470 is used to receive a second radio frequency signal in a reception mode. In the reception mode, the first radio frequency signal is switched to an alternate circuit pathway 472. This may be performed by a radio frequency integrated circuit (408) or by other control circuitry. Switching to a third or alternate circuit pathway 472 reduces leakage of the first radio frequency signal into the second radio frequency signal. Aspects include the third/alternative circuit pathway having a higher attenuation factor with respect to the the second circuit pathway, than the first circuit pathway. Thus, the amount of local current leakage from the first circuit pathway to the second pathway is greater than the amount of local current leakage from the further circuit pathway to the second circuit pathway.
