Apparatus suitable for producing sponge titanium which includes a reactor 10, a reactor cover 20 and a stirring device 21 mounted in the cover 20. A sealing ring 16 is arranged between the reactor 10 and the cover 20 and the reactor 10, and a device 30 for lifting the cover 20 is located to one side of the cover 20. A resistance furnace 40 is located above the cover 20 with a pipe through which molten metal can be fed leading from the furnace 40 into the reactor 10 when a valve 42 in the pipe is open. A pipe 12 for evacuating the reactor 10 and another 13 for feeding gas into the reactor 10 are located in the cover 20.
