Dealing with occluding features in face detection methods

The methods include capturing, by a camera of a computing device (10), an image including at least a face of a user 70,90, and calculating a face template of the face in the image. The template is then analyzed to determine whether the face includes at least one of, a removable facial feature (e.g. glasses 72), and a non-removable facial feature (e.g a beard 92), that decrease a level of distinctiveness between two faces. When the face includes the removable facial feature, the method further includes outputting a notification 74 for the user to remove the removable facial feature. When the face includes the non-removable facial feature, the method further includes adjusting (e.g. increasing 94) a first similarity score threshold to a second similarity score threshold.
