Controlling the output of information to a driver based on an estimated driver workload

A method of controlling the output of information to a driver is disclosed. At least one operating parameter of a vehicle is monitored, and a driver workload is estimated based on the at least one operating parameter. The output of information to a driver can be controlled based on the estimated driver workload. The operating parameter may specify an operational status or an operating range of one or more associated vehicle systems. Driver workload may be estimated with reference to one or more thresholds wherein the thresholds may define a plurality of driver workload ratings e.g. low, medium, and high workload. The output of information may comprise the presentation of one or more messages wherein controlling the output of information to the driver may comprise controlling the timing of the presentation of the one or more messages, or controlling the format of the one or more messages.
