A wireless mobile telephone handset control system comprising a wireless control signal transmission unit configured to broadcast a wireless control signal for reception by a mobile telephone handset, wherein the control signal is configured to selectively disable functionality of the handset. Aspects of the invention include selectively disabling: typing of text messages on the handset; internet browsing by the handest; dialling of telephone numbers (except emergency numbers) by the handset; audio outputs from the handsets. The control system is configured to selectively disable operation of a handset within a vehicle or part of a building. It may selectively disable functionality of a handset that has been pre-registered to a vehicle and not to selectively disable functionality of a handset that has not been pre-registered to the vehicle. The wireless control signal may be Bluetooth (RTM).
