PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a belt-driven traction sheave elevator, which improves safety, particularly when only one belt is used for transmission between a driving machine and a traction sheave.SOLUTION: In the traction sheave elevator, which has a driving machine (12) in which an output shaft (14) is connected to a traction sheave (16) through an endless driving member (20), are provided an encoder (46), a motor speed detection device (35) and a monitor device (36) supplied with an output signal of the encoder and a speed signal of the motor speed detection device in connection with the traction sheave. The monitor device has a comparator, and the comparator compares the output signal of the encoder with the speed signal of the motor speed detection device. The monitor device, when the comparison result value exceeds a threshold, starts an emergency operation.
