PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an impact absorption mechanism capable of efficiently and stably exhibiting an absorption capacity of collision energy, and a protection device for a falling object excellent in absorption capacity of collision energy and also with reduced manufacturing and construction costs.;SOLUTION: An impact absorption mechanism 50 includes: a general-purpose steel rope 52; and an energy absorption rope 51 having a smaller vertical elastic modulus as compared to the general-purpose steel rope 52 and a longer margin of elongation to breaking thereof as compared to the same length of the general-purpose steel rope 52, the general-purpose steel rope 52 having an extra length to the energy absorption rope 51 and being connected with the energy absorption rope 51 in parallel in a state that the extra length is secured.
