PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas engine capable of smoothly switching stoichiometric operation and lean operation, a gas heat pump device and a cogeneration device utilizing the gas engine, and a method of controlling the gas engine.SOLUTION: A gas engine 1 executes stoichiometric operation in a high load, and lean operation in intermediate and low loads. In a valve 2 supplying an air-fuel mixture of air and a fuel gas to the gas engine 1, the opening area of the valve is controlled by a control portion 3 by connecting a stoichiometric valve portion 21 and a lean valve portion 22 in series and connecting the stoichiometric valve portion 21 to a mixer 24 side, so that a prescribed opening area for realizing the stoichiometric operation is secured, the opening area is uniformly reduced with time by the termination of switching operation from the stoichiometric operation to the lean operation to secure a prescribed opening area to realize the lean operation, and the opening area is uniformly increased with time by the termination of the switching operation from the lean operation to the stoichiometric operation.
