A Raman distributed feedback (DFB) fiber laser is disclosed. The laser has a Raman length of less than 20 cm including a pump light source and a distributed feedback (DFB) diffraction grating having a discontinuous phase structure located within no more than 10% from the center of the diffraction grating. A Raman DFB fiber laser with a gain fiber and an optical spectrum having a light bandwidth less than 1 gigahertz (GHz) (maximum intensity is different from the frequency of the pump laser) at half maximum light intensity A laser signal is generated. Raman lasers include compensation for nonlinear phase changes due to the Kerr effect and thermal effects resulting from absorption of the light field.
