PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane electrode assembly for a direct methanol fuel cell for suppressing peeling off of a gas diffusion layer in the operation stop of a fuel cell or variation of environment to the membrane electrode assembly such as storage environment, and enhancing durability. PSOLUTION: A gas diffusion layer on a cathode side contains a hydroxyl group-containing fluorine polymer having the following structural unit.
