PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photoalignable material excellent in sensitivity and alignable even by short-time exposure, from which a photoalignable layer with high optical uniformity and no alignment defects can be produced, and to provide a liquid crystal alignment layer formed of the photoalignable material and exhibiting high alignment stability of a liquid crystal compound.SOLUTION: The photoalignable layer is produced by preparing a photoalignable polymer composition containing a specified photoalignable polymer and a specified polymer reactive with the photoalignable polymer, applying the polymer composition on a substrate or the like, drying and irradiating with light. A liquid crystal alignment layer is produced by aligning molecules of a liquid crystal compound to the photoalignable layer.
