PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst which can be used for a method for hydrodesulfurizing gasoline and minimize the reduction of an octane value without a significant loss of gasoline.;SOLUTION: The catalyst is for hydrodesulfurizing the gasoline fraction, including a carrier, the group VIII element selected from the group consisting of nickel and cobalt, the group VIB element selected from the group consisting of molybdenum and tungsten, and phosphorus. The concentration of the group VIB element per unit surface area of the carrier is 210^-4 to 1810^-4 gram/m² of an oxide of the group VIB element. In addition, the molar ratio of phosphorus for the group VIB element is 0.35 to 1.40, and the amount of the group VIB element is 1 to 20% in terms of the weight of an oxide of the group VIB element. Further, the amount of the group VIII element in the catalyst is 0.1 to 20% in terms of the weight of an oxide of the group VIII element.
