A method for washing a biomass which comprises: a first step for subjecting a biomass to at least one treatment for drying, softening or breaking cell membrane; and a second step for washing the biomass, that has been thus treated in the first step, with water. The treatment for softening or breaking cell membrane is conducted by pressurizing the biomass under a superatmospheric pressure. A method for producing a biomass charcoal which comprises dry-distilling the washed biomass. A method for operating a vertical furnace which comprises injecting the thus produced biomass charcoal, as a biomass charcoal to be injected into the vertical furnace, through a tuyere of the vertical furnace.
