The invention provides a slantwise axial type hydraulic rotary machine, of which the sliding portion of components formed by nodular cast iron and steel is more stable in sliding and the method for manufacturing the slantwise axial type hydraulic rotary machine. The hydraulic rotary machine (1) comprises a housing (2), a valve plate (3), a rotating shaft (4), a cylinder (5), a piston (6), a connecting rod (7), a drive plate (8), a central shaft (9), a tilting mechanism (10) and a regulator (11). A sliding portion of a top housing (13) forming the housing (2) and the valve plate (3) comprises a sliding surface (3B) and a sliding surface (13A), wherein the sliding surface (3B) is the sliding surface at the valve plate (3) side and is made by conducting surface nitriding treatment on steel (30) to form a nitrogen compound layer which is processed to form a sliding surface containing non-ferrous soft metallic film (31), and the sliding surface (13A) is the sliding surface at the top housing (13) side and is made by conducting surface nitriding treatment on nodular cast iron (40) to form a sliding surface containing a nitrogen compound layer (42). A part of the non-ferrous soft metallic film (31) is stored in the surface defects (41a, 41b) on the surface of the sliding surface (13A) and fills the defects.
