PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To purge with an exhaust pipe provided in a lower part of an intermediate hopper arranged in a waste charging device of a waste melting furnace to close a lower seal valve while preventing the slightly opened state of the lower seal valve, and to allow use of steam as purge gas.;SOLUTION: An upper seal valve 1 opened during reception of waste is provided at the upper end of the intermediate hopper 7 of the waste charging device arranged in the upper part of the waste melting furnace, and the lower seal valve 3 opened during charging of stored waste to inside of the waste melting furnace is provided at the lower end. In gas purge of the intermediate hopper 7, first, furnace interior gas intruding into the intermediate hopper 7 during charging of the waste to inside of the waste melting furnace is purged by using the purge gas by opening the exhaust valve 11 provided in the lower part of the intermediate hopper 7 and leading to the furnace interior with the lower seal valve 3 closed, and then, the exhaust valve 11 is closed.
