PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for verification of a dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) release message.;SOLUTION: An apparatus and method for verification of a DHCP RELEASE message comprises: extracting an IP address from the ciaddr field of the DHCP RELEASE message; determining a tunnel-associated IP address; comparing the IP address to the tunnel-associated IP address to determine if there is a match; and releasing the IP address if there is a match.
