PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a defective area so that it is not interrupted, on the occasion of determining the quality of an inspection object. PSOLUTION: In a visual inspection system 1, an image processing part 321 of a visual inspection apparatus 3 prepares a differential binarized image, using a shade image. A first extraction part 322 extracts a pixel group composing the same defective candidate area. A detection part 324 detects a pixel of which the differential absolute value is a threshold or above, as an edge pixel, for each line. A second calculation part 326 determines a projection width in the horizontal direction and a projection width in the vertical direction about the defective area extracted by a second extraction part 325. A determination part 327 determines the inspection object A as faulty when at least either of the projection widths in the horizontal and vertical directions is larger than a reference value. The detection part 324 detects the edge pixel for each line sequentially from a line where a defective width determined by a first calculation part 323 is the maximum, and sets the threshold of a subsequent line so that the threshold of the subsequent line may become lower as the defective width gets narrower.
