The present invention relates to the medical use of nitrites, such as inorganic nitrites, or any pharmaceutically acceptable salts, solvates, compositions, or prodrugs thereof, in the treatment of conditions that benefit from increased cerebral vascular flow. The pharmaceutical compositions used in these methods, which can be formulated for oral administration, can provide immediate release or extended release of the nitrite ion (NO₂⁻).
