The invention can be used to screen for biomarkers associated with a disease or condition. Such diseases and conditions include neurological diseases, autoimmune diseases and cancers mentioned above, as well as any diseases or conditions for which a biomarker exists, such as an antibody or other characteristic protein or biomolecule associated with the disease or its course. Large libraries of ligands according to the present invention can be used directly in a biological fluid, under appropriate experimental conditions and in accordance with the methods described in this application, for screening for such markers, while there is no need to use less carriers (for example, approximately 100,000 or less) or transfer such peptoids or ligands on micromatrices before screening a biological fluid. In addition, libraries of ligands can also be used for screening for cellular receptors that are specifically associated with a specific cell surface marker.
