The invention relates to electrical engineering. There proposed is a polymer insulator breakdown indicator containing a dielectric element having a central part, extending along the axis with a cavity opened at one of the ends, a radially extending peripheral part and a conductive rod for attachment to the insulator, one of the rod ends fixed inside the said cavity, a control electrode mounted coaxial to the said rod and butt-joined to the inside surface of the said peripheral part, a coating designed so that to enable electric insulation of the contact zone of the said control electrode and the said dielectric element; the said dielectric element in the indicator is made of a fragile thermally tensioned material and is equipped with an optic-induced breakdown; relative electric permittivity of the said coating is less than electric permittivity of the said dielectric element material. The invention enables error-free identification of a faulty polymer insulator in the network using a visual method (buy breakdown indication). The technical effect provides creating a reliable methodology for polymer insulators operability diagnostics.
